Appropriate use of PCA’s & exception codes can be the difference between losing QOF points and achieving 100% (or as close as possible) - they demonstrate good patient care has been offered as well as financial rewards.
PCA’s are automatically applied following the use of appropriate invite codes. Exception codes, both top level and single indicator codes, have to be added as and when appropriate - examples include allergy or patient declined codes and most need to be added each year if they still apply. We often see practices using multiple exception codes where they are not aware a single code would suffice.
And then there are exclusions - these apply for definitional reasons, for example newly diagnosed and newly registered patients or patients within a specific age range.
Many of these ‘codes’ are essential for patient care & practice income, they stop you being penalised for areas outside of your control so it is important they are used accurately.
