In last month’s edition, we included an article around work permits. Any employer who allows a child of school age to work, without obtaining a work permit, is breaking the law (even if they are working for their parents). Local Councils insist businesses intending to employ school-aged children must apply for a child employment permit before they can be employed.
We were asked a follow-up question regarding children who are volunteering, helping at COVID clinics, etc. If the circumstances under which they are volunteering means they are contributing to a business which is carried out for profit, even if the profit is for a charity, they will need a work permit or licence from the local authority. Work experience does not require a work permit as the child is covered under their school insurance.
The GOV website also recommends you check your insurance as many policies do not, as standard, cover children under 16.
For further information, check the GOV website or your local authority website and a quick email to your insurance company/broker to check your insurance will not do any harm!
